SURINAME (A 'free' unofficial translation) The Netherlands has a regular relationship of cooperation with Suriname. Suriname (capital city: Paramaribo) borders on: Atlantic Ocean (north), French Guiana (east), Guyana (west) and Brazil (south). Suriname has an area of 156,000 square km (3.8 times the size of the Netherlands) and a population of 350,000 people.
Important data: population growth 1.3%, BNP (Bruto National Product) per person 2080 US$, ODA (Official Development Assistance) per person 125 US$, life expectancy 68 years, 5% of the population older than 15 years are illiterate.
In 1995 almost f99 million was spent of the Dutch development aid to Suriname, for the most part paid from treaty funds. Part of the monies were used to upgrade the judicial system, police and revenue/tax systems and to pay off debts to international organizations. In 1995 a safety net was set up so that the poorest Surinamer received a food packet and some money. Furthermore projects were financed to improve the infra structure, education, health care, development of the country site and the further expansion of exports.
