Subject: [Heritage] The Boeroe's (Farmers)

Led by three clergymen about 384 Dutch colonists mostly from Gelderland and Groningen arrived in 1845 and began working on the plantations Voorzorg and Mijn Vermaak. The colonization failed as 189 of them died of 'jungle fever' within six months. They moved later to a settlement called Groningen. As the emigration continued their numbers increased and there are still about 3000 descendants of these farmers living in Suriname. The Boeroe's made sure there were no inter-mariages with non-whites. They now live around Paramaribo and are involved in the cattle and agriculture industry. Very few until recent have academic degrees. There are some 25 Boeroe families with names such as: Van Brussel, vd Berg, Bakker, Loor, Gummels, v. Dijk, V. Ravenswaay, Overeen, Tammenga, Stolk, Sloot, Moniz etc. ------------
